We have just lived a very exciting Spanish Championship race where Jose Antonio Hermida has shown the good shape he is enjoying at the moment. Many were the riders that were going to give it all in order to win the national title, although Hermida was the favourite after his great result from last weekend at the European Championships.
We were expecting a group of favourites in the front and this is exactly what has happened in the first kilometers of the race, with 6 men at the front; but this little peloton with the most important riders has been dynamited by Hermida in the second of the 5 laps. Right there, the Multivan-Merida rider has rapidly opened a 25 seconds gap over a three-men group that included Iván Álvarez, Iñaki Lejarreta and Sergio Mantecón. Right behind them Ruzafa, Coloma y Gispert were chasing.
Hermida has ridden alone for a solo victoy with a gap that was stable in around 1:30 minutes; this has been the advantage he has manged in the second part of the race.
Hermida was happy with the victory and explained his race as follows: “the first moments were quite tense. The Orbea guys wer pushing hard and, although I was feeling comfortable with the pace, I didn’t want to let them rule the competition. This is why I attacked so early. I am positively surprised about the circuit. With the riders riding on it during the races, it has become tougher and more technical than a couple of days ago. This championship is special for me and gives me a lot of confidence and morale when facing the coming World Cups at Canada”.
Hermida has worn today the final version of his Hermida Signature Series gloves in the best way he could: winning!
The rider from Puigcerdà flies tomorrow to Canada, where he will race the two Canadian WC to be held in the next two weeks.
