Hermida placed himself in the group of front-runners, where together with his companion Naef, the Canadian Kabush and Switzerland’s Vogel they made the race. In a competition with only 5 circuits, Hermida went for it and gave his all. On the penultimate lap Ralph Naef, a team member of Multivan Mérida and co-rider with Hermida, managed to escape from the front runners, this compelled Hermida to slow his pace to hinder other front runners from giving the chase to Multivan’s Swiss rider. Just before finishing the fourth circuit, checking to see if his team-mate had attained a more than considerable advantage, Hermida decided to attack. He escaped easily going for a pole position. A solo lap allowed him to place distance between himself and his rivals, giving him second place in Canberra as he was unable to catch up with Naef.

On finishing the race, Hermida said “It has been a tough race. With the hassle of the journey, arriving at Canberra has weighed me down. The last two days before the race I was experiencing good sensations which in the end I have been able to put into action with the race. We were in the group with the usual front-runners but without Absalon and Peraud. Two laps before the final, Naef attacked and I had to keep myself back, working for him, so that those who were behind me could not catch him up. After a little more than one lap, when my team-mate was at a considerable distance, I attacked and finally finished in second place, and got rid of the thorn in my side which I have had since the race in the Olympic Games.
