Hermida was already aware of his condition and was unable to make a convincing start, his 15th position after the first round was not a good sign. The current Spanish champion however did not even consider backing out of the Vall Nord race. “I have to make an effort for the team, and for the fans who have come to see me” he stated, and an effort he made.

His physical condition however became more evident, bringing him down as the race progressed, although he is used to being up at the front he was unable to breathe due to the flu, and on circuit number 5 he left the race to avoid further possible complications and spoil his chances in future competitions. Hermida is not a man who gives up easily, but this time circumstances forced him to retire early.

“I have had this flu for three days and it has knocked me out. I made an effort as I believe that I owe my team and I should be out there. I also did it for all the fans who came to see me, as this is the world cup event which is closest to home. I feel pretty bad about it as I am the rider with the greatest hopes for this race in particular. This flu will not in theory modify the plans I have with respect the next races, which means I’ll be up and running in Fort Williams and in Canada”.
